“In the wake of a new Millenium we are striving for excellence in all aspects of our lives. We have pondered on how can we achieve it while maintaining the essence of  ‘Balance’  in our pursuits.  What is the key to opening the doors to new levels of excellence?  The question has remained how… the answer may be just around the next corner…”

From Humble Beginnings  ...a Technique is Born

This Australian technique is well on its way to proving that what is good for man, is good for the horse.  With its humble beginnings starting in Geelong, Victoria, with a man called Tom Bowen, the “Bowen Technique” was born.  It has changed the lives of  countless numbers world wide.

Tom had no formal training but it was evident that the reputation of his work was enough for most.  The Webb report, an Australian government survey of Tom’s practice revealed that he saw on an average of 13,000 people in 1975.  People travelled from far and wide to see Tom.  Tom had  treated horses, though he did not make a habit of it.

Bowen is a gentle technique that empowers the body’s own healing resources.  A treatment comprises sequences of precise moves each at specific sites on the body, generally only needing 2-3 treatments to clear most conditions.

It can address a wide range of conditions, treating the whole body, it facilitates an integrated response working on many systems in the body.

The Only Official “Bowen on Horses” Equine Muscle Release Therapy

Equine Muscle Release Therapy in the horse world, has been derived from the original  Bowen Technique.  This is the only Bowen on horses recognised by the Bowen Academy of Australia.  Developed by Alison Goward, a Natural Therapist, from Eumundi, Queensland.  Among her many credentials, she is an accredited teacher for the Bowen Academy of Australia and Queensland Institute of Natural Science, Alison was also an Equine Nurse with vet Terry McEvoy in the late 1970’s .

Equine Muscle Release Therapy has been developed since 1990.

It has been developed from an understanding that horses, like people are subjected to stress and strain from performing athletic tasks asked of them by their owners, (similarly to athletes).  If these stresses and strains continue without relief, then there will be a breakdown in the body somewhere.

This breakdown may be physical, as in lactic acid retention becoming inflamed odeaemas and spasms, resulting in structural problems as the skeleton is pulled out of alignment by the spasming muscles.

The breakdown can also be nervous system origin, mental origin or emotional.  All point to the same thing, that the horse is not in balance.

Alison Goward, a human Bowen teacher & practitioner, who has been involved with horses all her life, developed EMRT from the understanding that horses, like people, are subject to physical & mental stress. She first adapted the human technique to the physiology & anatomy of the horse in 1990. Alison’s background of school teaching, equine nursing & in the last 12 years of writing, researching & lecturing body therapies for the government accredited Queensland Institute of Natural Sciences in Australia, allowed her the knowledge to develop the work further in the courses that have gained world-wide recognition. Alison is accredited to teach the Bowen Technique through the Bowen Academy (1994). Her courses are currently undergoing the accreditation procedures required by the Australian Government as part of their ongoing development towards Diploma. The Horse Owners’ Course is designed for horse owners & as the first step towards undertaking the Practitioner Level course. This was introduced in 1997 & graduates are accredited with the Bowen Academy of Australia.
